What does AI mean
Appearance
AI stands for Artificial Intelligence, which refers to the ability of machines or computer systems to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks include things like understanding language, recognizing patterns, solving problems, and learning from experience.
AI can be divided into two broad categories:
- Narrow AI (Weak AI): This type of AI is designed to handle a specific task or a narrow range of tasks. Examples include voice assistants like Siri, recommendation systems like those on Netflix or Amazon, and even AI in self-driving cars. These systems are great at their specific functions but can't handle tasks outside their programmed capabilities.
- General AI (Strong AI): This refers to AI that can understand and learn any intellectual task that a human can do. It’s more versatile and can apply its intelligence to a wide range of problems. This type of AI doesn't exist yet and is a subject of ongoing research.
AI systems are often powered by machine learning (a type of AI that enables systems to learn from data and improve over time) and neural networks (computing systems inspired by the human brain).
In short, AI is about creating smart systems that can think, learn, and adapt in ways similar to human beings.
