Although Smart moved on, VCU basketball remained a dominant force under new head coach Mike Rhoades, who took over in 2017. Rhoades, a former assistant coach under Smart, has continued to maintain the high standards set by his predecessor. Like Smart, Rhoades has embraced the aggressive defensive philosophy that VCU is known for, and his teams have consistently been competitive in the CAA and on the national stage.

Rhoades has guided the Rams to numerous NCAA Tournament appearances and has maintained a high level of success in the CAA. Under his leadership, VCU has continued to make the NCAA Tournament and compete with some of the best teams in college basketball.
