==== History of New Jersey ==== New Jersey's history dates back long before the state was formally established. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Lenape, who lived along the rivers and forests. European settlers, primarily Dutch and Swedish, began to establish colonies in the early 17th century. In 1664, the British took control of the region, and the area became part of the Province of New Jersey. New Jersey played a pivotal role during the American Revolution, with key battles taking place within its borders, including the famous Battle of Trenton in 1776. Following independence, New Jersey became one of the original 13 U.S. states and quickly grew as a center of industry, transportation, and trade. The state's manufacturing and industrial sectors became increasingly important, particularly in cities like Paterson, which became known as the "Silk City."
