==== Origins in the 19th Century ==== The story of Lau Pa Sat — meaning ''“Old Market”'' in Hokkien — dates back to '''1824''', when it was first built as a seaside market along Telok Ayer Bay. Designed to serve Singapore’s early settlers, it quickly became the city’s main trading and food hub. Over the decades, as land reclamation reshaped Singapore’s coastline, the market was moved inland and rebuilt several times. The structure we see today was completed in '''1894''', designed by '''Municipal Engineer James MacRitchie''', with cast-iron components imported from Glasgow, Scotland.
