=== A Brief History of Liberty Basketball === Founded in 1971 by Dr. Jerry Falwell, Liberty University has been an integral part of the Lynchburg, Virginia community. The school’s athletic department took a big leap forward when it established its NCAA Division I basketball program in the 1980s. The Flames were initially a competitive program in smaller conferences, but it wasn’t until the early 2000s that Liberty began to find consistent success. In recent years, Liberty has emerged as a true contender in the ASUN Conference, challenging both local and national powers. With a rich history of success in the NCAA tournament, the Flames have managed to build a basketball program that draws attention beyond just their conference.
