=== History and Origins === Founded in 1754 as King’s College by royal charter from King George II of England, Columbia University holds the distinction of being the fifth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. After the American Revolution, the college changed its name to Columbia in honor of Christopher Columbus, a figure representing discovery and exploration. Initially situated in lower Manhattan, Columbia moved to its current campus in Morningside Heights in 1897. Over the years, the university has grown in both size and reputation, becoming a central part of New York City’s intellectual and cultural fabric.
