BWI was opened in 1950 as Friendship International Airport, initially designed to serve the growing aviation needs of the Baltimore-Washington area. In 2005, the airport was renamed in honor of Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Supreme Court Justice, recognizing his impact on civil rights and social justice in the United States.
